You start with a guided bus tour through Harstad before visiting Trondenes Church, Trondenes Historic Centre and the medieval farmstead. From here there is approximately a 2-hour drive to Sortland.

The impressive stone church on the historic Trondenes peninsula, just north of Harstad, is known as the world’s northernmost preserved medieval stone church and has for centuries served as both a religious centre and a symbol of power and defence. Its thick stone walls and missing church tower give it a fortress-like appearance, reflecting a time when it could also serve as a place of refuge during turbulent periods.

Inside the church, you will find a rich and well-preserved interior with three magnificent late-medieval altarpieces, Gothic frescoes, and details that reflect both local craftsmanship and international influences. The visit also includes a short devotional service inside the church.

Trondenes Historic Centre and the medieval farmstead offer a vivid insight into daily life in the Middle Ages, presented by guides in authentic clothing and in reconstructed surroundings based on archaeological findings and written sources.

The journey then continues towards Sortland through an ever-changing landscape, from open fjords and sharp peaks to lush agricultural valleys.

From Refsnes to Flesnes we take a ferry, a crossing of approximately 20 minutes. During the crossing you can stand on deck and enjoy a 360-degree view of the wide Kvæfjord. The ferry has both toilets and a café on board.

After the ferry, the road continues through Kanstadfjorden and mountain passes, offering panoramic views of the mountains and deep blue fjords before descending again towards Sortland.

The journey ends with a spectacular drive across the Sortland Bridge. We aim to cross the bridge just as the Havila Kystruten sails in, and you can look out for waving fellow passengers. From the top of the bridge you can see the entire blue town and the Sortlandsundet spread out beneath you before arriving at Sortland harbour.

The church may be closed or have restricted access due to religious services, religious holidays, or other events.
