Outside the small fishing village of Gjesvær, warm and cold ocean currents meet and create a rich feeding ground that attracts a vast diversity of Norway’s seabirds. As a result, the 283-meter-high island of Gjesværstappan has become one of Norway’s largest seabird cliffs, where tens of thousands of birds gather to nest and raise the next generation throughout the summer.
Just ten minutes after departing from the pier, you arrive at the bird cliffs. Thermal suits are available on board if you would like a more comfortable trip. You are free to move around the boat, and with binoculars you can get even closer to the birds. Keep an eye out – the area is also home to seals.
At the bird cliffs, you can see the charming puffins with their colourful beaks, elegant cormorants, black-and-white guillemots, kittiwakes, auks, and northern gannets diving vertically into the sea in pursuit of their prey. Above the bustling birdlife, the majestic white-tailed eagle often circles in search of food.
Thousands of seabirds fill the sky, the cliffs, and the sea with life. Around you they glide through the air, dive into the ocean in search of fish, or guard their nests high up on the cliffs.
