This tour takes you to two of Lofoten’s best beaches: Hauklandstranda, which Lonely Planet has named the finest beach in Europe, and Uttakleiva, which many consider Norway’s most romantic beach with its combination of fine sand and large rocks.
At Hauklandstranda, there is a modern visitor center with a café and facilities for guests. Please note, however, that the visitor center will be closed during our visit. The beaches lie at the edge of the open sea in tiny villages with only a handful of inhabitants. The bus ride takes you through the beautiful Lofoten landscape before you continue on foot over a low mountain pass between the two beaches. The walk between the beaches follows a clear trail and takes about 30–40 minutes at a relaxed pace. Here you’ll enjoy iconic views in all directions and plenty of photo opportunities, ensuring pictures of some of Norway’s most photographed beaches.
The colors are Caribbean, with white sand and tempting turquoise water, but with the Arctic Ocean just around the corner, the water temperature means that only the bravest take a dip.
At the beginning and end of the season, it may become dark towards the end of the hike. Weather in Lofoten can change quickly, and the hike takes place in varying conditions, including wind, rain, fog, and cooler temperatures. Even on sunny days at sea level, it can be significantly colder and windier at higher elevations. Conversely, weather conditions may sometimes be more stable in the mountains than along the coast. The terrain can be wet, muddy, rocky, and slippery, so we recommend wearing practical and comfortable clothing suitable for mountain hiking. Windproof and waterproof outer layers are recommended for the best possible experience. As we say in Norway: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.”
