Join one of our most active excursions – this tour will really get your heart rate up!

After about a 25-minute climb up a stone staircase built by Sherpas of approximately 1,100 steps, constructed by skilled craftsmen from Nepal, you are rewarded with a spectacular view from the entrance to the hole. When you reach the top, you truly get a sense of how enormous the hole is. In photos it may appear smaller, but in reality it is impressively large – a full 160 meters long, 35 meters high, and 20 meters wide.

Up here you have time to enjoy the view before returning the same way down to the bus. Back at the starting point, you are rewarded in true Norwegian style – coffee and lefse taste extra good after an active experience.

According to the legend of the Helgeland mountains, the hole was created when Hestmannen, in disappointed love, shot an arrow at Lekamøya. The King of Sømna Mountain threw his hat in the way to stop the arrow – but it passed straight through and left the opening we see today. When the sun rose, they all turned into stone.

The more likely explanation is that the tunnel was formed by frost weathering and coastal erosion along a zone of weakness in the mountain at the end of the last Ice Age. On the hike to Torghatten, you will hear more about both the geology and the fascinating stories surrounding this unique mountain.

It is not always possible to walk through the hole due to weather and safety conditions, and this is assessed upon arrival at the entrance to the hole.
