The Nidelva flows through the centre of Trondheim and has been part of the city’s daily life for centuries. It has served as a route for trade and transport, and today it is a calm area for recreation.
About the excursion
The tour is suitable for all levels of experience and works well in both summer and winter. After a short drive from the quay, it starts at Tempe sports facility, where experienced instructors provide a safe and clear introduction. You will go through paddling technique, safety, and equipment before setting out.

The Nidelva winds through the entire city and has been a lifeline for Trondheim for centuries – from historical trade and transport to today’s peaceful recreational area.
The tour is suitable for everyone, regardless of experience, and is just as beautiful and atmospheric in both summer and winter. It starts early in the morning – a calm and atmospheric beginning to the day, where you experience the city in soft morning light and a unique sense of tranquility before it comes to life. The tour begins at Tempe Sports Facility after a short drive from the quay, where you are welcomed by experienced instructors who ensure a safe and comfortable introduction.
After a briefing on paddling techniques, safety, and equipment, you set out on a calm journey down the river. Along the way, you glide through beautiful natural surroundings, rich birdlife, and onward toward the city’s historic center.Along the route, you paddle past historic, colorful warehouses, continuing toward the majestic Nidaros Cathedral and beneath the old city bridges – landmarks that offer a unique perspective of Trondheim from the water. The city reveals itself from a new angle, with charming surroundings and fascinating views of architecture and landscape.
The tour continues through the colorful canals before arriving at Brattøra quay, where you take a short 15-minute walk back to the ship. Once back on board, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast.
From November 1 to May 1, dry suits are used for increased comfort and safety. All participants must be able to swim (minimum 50 meters) and have a maximum weight of 110 kg. Depending on how quickly the group paddles as a whole, the route may be shortened. If the river freezes or it becomes very dark in December–January, paddling will take place only along the canal. During the winter season, participants should wear at least two layers of underwear under the dry suit, as well as a hat and mittens. In summer, it is recommended to wear waterproof trousers and a windproof jacket. In addition, it is advisable to use sunscreen, wear a cap, and bring water.
