This excursion takes you through some of Lofoten’s most well-known fishing villages and scenic highlights. We begin with a photo stop at Torvdalshalsen before continuing to Kabelvåg – Lofoten’s oldest fishing village and formerly the largest. It was here that the commercial part of the Lofoten fishery began more than 1,000 years ago, making the area rich in history and culture.
In Kabelvåg, you will have the opportunity to visit either Galleri Espolin or the Lofoten Museum. At the Lofoten Museum, you will experience one of the best-preserved merchant estates in Lofoten, offering a unique insight into the contrast between the fishermen’s simple and demanding lives and the more comfortable lifestyle of the estate owners. Here you will see the main building from 1815, as well as authentic fishermen’s cabins (rorbuer), boathouses, and traditional Nordland boats that convey Lofoten’s long fishing heritage. Alternatively, you may visit Galleri Espolin, where a large collection of works by Kaare Espolin Johnson awaits—known for his powerful depictions of the sea, the dramatic landscape, and the harsh life of fishermen.
On the way, we also pass Vågan Church, better known as the Lofoten Cathedral. This yellow wooden church is the largest church in Northern Norway and one of the largest wooden buildings in the country, standing prominently in the landscape.
Please note that during the first half of April, it may be dark toward the end of the tour.
