Your adventure, step by step
Set sail from Ålesund – In Ålesund, our Fjord Ranger boards the Havila ship and joins the voyage into Geiranger. A Fjord Ranger is a nature interpreter working in Norway’s World Heritage areas, responsible for sharing knowledge about nature, culture, and fjord landscapes. During the journey, the Fjord Ranger gives a lecture on fjord life, both past and present, and shares fascinating stories that offer a unique insight into the landscape you are sailing through.
Arrive in Geiranger (14:15) – Together with the Fjord Ranger, you go ashore by tender boat and prepare to experience the small village of Geiranger, surrounded by steep mountainsides, waterfalls, and dramatic Western Norwegian nature that makes the area a UNESCO-listed natural wonder.
Journey to the Norsk Fjordsenter – A short bus ride takes you to the Norwegian Fjord Centre, a modern visitor centre in Geiranger that gives you a deeper understanding of the fjord landscape you are in. Through exhibitions and film, you gain insight into the natural forces that have shaped the area and how people have lived and adapted to life in the fjord through generations.
Explore, learn & taste:
- The visit to the World Heritage Centre begins with a gathering at the charming Grindløa, where the Fjord Ranger reveals how people have thrived in this dramatic landscape.
- Enjoy a local waffle and coffee/tea – because no Norwegian experience is complete without a taste of tradition!
- Discover traditional Norwegian building techniques and the art of living by the fjord.
- We then continue into the Fjord Centre experience, which begins with the beautiful film from the entire World Heritage area in the cinema, where you can enjoy a powerful nature experience from the comfort of your seat. After the film, you are free to explore the exhibitions at your own pace. The exhibitions showcase the striking and distinctive fjord landscape that was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005. Through exhibitions and interactive stations, you gain insight into the geological processes that shaped the fjord landscape and what it looks like today. You will also learn about the biodiversity and how animals and plants have adapted to the natural environment here.
Fossevandringa – Walk with the waterfalls:
- Ready for an adventure? Join the Fjord Ranger on a guided walk down Fossevandringa, an impressive waterfall trail with 327 steps and panoramic views of Storfossen. Prefer to take it easy? Enjoy a relaxed walk at your own pace.
- Return to Ålesund: Board a comfortable bus for a scenic 2.5-hour drive back to your Havila ship, arriving just in time for dinner (19:45).
