Experience Engenbreen, one of Svartisen’s impressive glacier tongues, from the viewpoint at Brestua. Svartisen is Norway’s second-largest glacier and consists of two main areas, Vestisen and Østisen. Engenbreen is part of Vestisen and is one of Europe’s lowest-altitude glaciers, with a glacier tongue extending down towards sea level.
From Ørnes, we travel by bus to Holandsvika, a journey of approximately 45 minutes through beautiful coastal scenery. Here, we board the ferry across Holandsfjorden to Litlvika (approximately 10 minutes), where you can enjoy views of the fjord and the landscape surrounding Svartisen. From here, you can either walk approximately 1.3 km to Brestua or take a minibus. For larger groups, some waiting time for the minibus may occur. From disembarking in Litlvika until we return by ferry, you will have approximately 45 minutes to enjoy the area around Brestua. Here, you can enjoy views of Engenbreen across Engenbrevatnet and have a cup of coffee with local pastries inside Brestua.
Engenbreen is one of Norway’s most documented glaciers, and its development over the past centuries shows how the glacier has changed over time. The glacier has both advanced and retreated several times and is an interesting example of how glaciers are affected by climate.
After the visit, we return by ferry to Holandsvika and continue by bus back to Bodø. The bus journey back to Bodø takes approximately 2.5 hours without stops, so we recommend using the toilet facilities at Brestua before departure. A light lunch box from the ship can be enjoyed on the bus ride back to Bodø. Upon arrival in Bodø, we reboard the Havila ship.
Wear good shoes and warm, windproof clothing.
The ferry takes you across Holandsfjorden in 10 minutes, with beautiful views of Engenbreen in the background.
