On the way towards the Atlantic Road, we drive through Kristiansund, known as Norway’s klippfisk (dried cod) town – a title the town has held since the 1700s. When weather conditions allow, we make a photo stop at what has been named one of the world’s most beautiful driving routes: the Atlantic Road, which crosses small islands and skerries right out towards the open sea.*
We then continue towards the marble mines at Nås between Eide and Elnesvågen. Marble has been extracted here since 1938, and mining has created 40 kilometres of tunnels spread over eleven levels. In parts of the mine, mining activity is still ongoing. We drive into the mountain and to the Bergtatt marble mine, which features a 300-metre-long lake with clean and crystal-clear spring water, located 190 metres inside the mountain.
We are provided with helmets and life jackets and set out on the water with a safe and stable raft; deep inside, the raft docks at a quay. Here we get to taste pure spring water drawn directly from the rock wall. The water is illuminated with colourful lighting, and chandeliers hang in the tunnels, creating a magical atmosphere. The experience is also accessible for wheelchair users.
After the boat tour, we gather in the main hall, a beautiful concert hall with capacity for 300 guests. Here we watch a short film and learn more about the mining operations, while being served meat soup with flatbread and, of course, the mine’s own spring water as a drink. Experienced miners share their knowledge and answer questions along the way, both during the boat tour and in the concert hall.
After the visit to the mine, we continue to Molde, the “City of Roses,” where we enjoy a short panoramic bus tour before being dropped off at Molde quay to await the arrival of the ship.
* Please note that it will be dark upon our arrival at the Atlantic Road from approximately mid-November to mid-February.
