We begin at the Havila Voyage’s ship and set off on a walk through Tromsø’s historic centre, passing landmarks such as Roald Amundsen’s Square and the charming wooden cathedral dating back to 1861. Known as the gateway to the Arctic, Tromsø has played an important role in polar exploration and Arctic trade, and your guide shares stories of explorers, fishermen, and residents who helped shape this northern city.

Walking along the main street, Storgata, and through the town square, you will also experience modern Tromsø — a lively university city where tourism, fisheries, and Arctic research blend with local traditions and everyday life.

The walk continues towards Skansen and Vervet, an area where historic harbour structures and small wooden buildings from the late 1700s stand side by side with modern waterfront architecture, reflecting how the city continues to evolve. From here, you may also catch a glimpse of the small lighthouse as well as the Arctic Cathedral across the water.

This vibrant neighbourhood is the perfect place to pause and enjoy a warm drink and a traditional Norwegian snack before continuing your journey.

As we follow the shoreline back toward the city centre, the choice is yours: linger a little longer and explore Tromsø at your own pace, return to the ship, or join your guide for a walk to Polaria, Tromsø’s beloved Arctic aquarium.
