The excursion begins with a tender boat from the Havila Voyages ship, followed by a bus from the quay in Urke. Here Hjørundfjorden splits into two, and we drive into the fjord arm Norangsfjorden, where steep mountains plunge straight down into the water and the strip of land leaves room for little more than the road and a few farms.

At the innermost point of the fjord lies the village of Øye. Over a hundred years ago, before there was a road along the fjord, visitors arrived by sea – among them royal guests and mountaineers aboard the first tourist ships. The area has since avoided mass tourism, and today only around 100 people still live in Øye and Urke.

We drive up into Norangsdalen – Norway's narrowest valley with a road – and make our first stop at Lygnstøylvatnet. In 1908, a landslide blocked the river running through the valley, and the lake that formed now covers the foundations of an old mountain farm. Further up lie several old mountain farms once used by farmers lower in the valley for summer grazing, among them Urasetra, where we make a longer stop. An old cart track leads 300–400 metres to the old buildings by a small mountain lake, where you'll hear more about mountain farming and summer life there.

On the way back, we stop at Stavbergsetra, where the buildings cling to the mountainside, before continuing to Øye for a longer stop by the fjord. Coffee and lefse are served here, and toilets are available.

The excursion continues past Urke to the ferry quay at Lekneset, with views over both fjord arms, before we drive back to Urke village centre. Here, by the shop, the power plant and the rushing Urke river, is the excursion's final stop. If the weather is good and time allows, you can walk the last ten minutes down to the quay yourself – the rest of the group takes the bus. The excursion ends at the quay in Urke.
