We begin the excursion at the quay in Sortland, where the guide welcomes us. We then board the bus and travel through the coastal landscape of Vesterålen. Along the way, we learn why Sortland is called “The Blue Town” and gain insight into the region’s development. Between 1850 and 1960, Richard With, through the Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab, laid the foundation for what is today the coastal route.

On the way to Stokmarknes, we follow the views along the Sortland Sound. On clear days, we may also see Higravtinden – the highest mountain in the Lofoten Islands at 1,148 metres above sea level.

The journey continues to Stokmarknes, known as the birthplace of the coastal route. Here we visit the Norwegian Coastal Express Museum, a large preservation building that houses an entire ship – the MS Finnmarken.

On a guided tour, we learn how the coastal vessels have been a lifeline along the Norwegian coast, and the importance they have had for local communities, business, and the people living here. The MS Finnmarken contains artefacts, archives, photographs, and exhibitions that provide insight into life on board over many decades.

The Havila vessel arrives in Stokmarknes at approximately 14:15 and can be viewed from the top deck of the MS Finnmarken – a special moment that connects the history of the coastal route with today’s journey. The visit allows ample time to experience both the exhibitions and the MS Finnmarken at your own pace.

The visit ends with coffee and carrot cake served in the café area onboard the MS Finnmarken. No later than 15:00, we return to the ship. The distance from the museum to the quay is approximately 50 metres, and the guide ensures everyone finds their way back.
