Trondheim has small-town charm and colorful, old wooden houses from the 1600s, while at the same time the city offers modern sports facilities, educational and research institutions, and a vibrant nightlife.

The Nidaros Cathedral in the summer in Trondheim

About the excursion

The guides meet you at the quay, and the excursion continues by bus through the centre of Trondheim to Nidaros Cathedral. The cathedral is built over the burial site of Saint Olav, who was killed at Stiklestad in 1030, and has been one of the Nordic region's largest pilgrimage sites since the Middle Ages. You'll go inside the cathedral and join a guided tour, before we return by bus to the ship.

On the bus through the city's streets and neighbourhoods, the guide tells you about the history and points out the highlights. The wide view over both the fjord and the city comes at the photo stop at «Utsikten».

From here you also see Nidaros Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe, with towers and a spire reaching 91 metres into the sky.

The cathedral was built over the grave of Saint Olav, the Viking king who Christianised Norway, and has since been Norway's national shrine and a place of pilgrimage for almost a thousand years. The church has also been used for the coronation and anointing of Norwegian kings and queens – right up to modern times.

The visit to the cathedral is the last stop on the Trondheim tour. Here you'll have time to see the church on your own, and to join a guided tour that tells you more about the building and its history. As a memento of your visit, you'll receive a book about the cathedral.

The cathedral may be closed or have limited access due to services, religious holidays, or other events.
