Islands and the sea also characterise the surrounding area. Here you will find small fishing villages clinging to the edges of the ocean as well as the Atlantic Ocean Road that was awarded the title of "Norwegian Construction of the Century" in 2005.

In Kristiansund in the 19th century, those who ran the klipfish industry spoke French at social occasions. They brought the big world to the city, and in the city there are places nicknamed "Tahiti" and "Morocco". They also brought opera with them, and Kristiansund has Norway's oldest opera.

Kristiansund has colourful post-war architecture. Nearly 900 houses burned down after the bombing of the city in 1940. When reconstructing the city, they took inspiration from the town's fishing and klipfish history and turned the gables of many of the houses to face the street or quay like the old klipfish wharves did.
