The cathedral was built over the grave of St Olav, the Viking king who brought Christianity to Norway.
The 101-metre-long church is the world's northernmost Gothic cathedral. Construction of the cathedral began in 1070 and was not completed until around 1300. The cathedral is a pilgrimage destination for pilgrims from all over Europe. It is the traditional location for the coronation of the King of Norway; therefore Norway's crown regalia can be seen in Trondheim, even though the king and his household are based in the current capital, Oslo.
Trondheim is a lively student city with an intimate city centre, colourful wooden houses and small, independent shops in several charming districts. In addition, there is an emphasis on locally sourced food and locally brewed beer, which means that a visit here can be really tasty.
