The length of the tour is adjusted according to the weather and our guests.
Vågar in Lofoten holds great historical significance as Northern Norway’s first town (Vágar) from the 11th century, built around the annual Lofoten fishery for skrei. Kabelvåg and Storvågan functioned as trading centres during the Middle Ages, while Svolvær later developed into a modern town and the administrative centre of the municipality. Skrei is the very foundation of Lofoten’s history and has shaped the economy, culture, and daily life of people here for centuries.
Vågar is often mentioned in medieval sagas and historical documents, mainly because kings and archbishops had to oversee the important fisheries in the region. Without the presence of these authorities, very little would have been recorded about the everyday lives of the local population. During the walk, you will learn about the skrei fishery, the medieval town of Vågar, and the people who lived from the sea. Fishermen from near and far came to Lofoten to take part in this profitable yet dangerous work and sold dried fish to merchants travelling from towns in the south.
Experience an Arctic winter evening as you visit an authentic rorbu from 1910 and a boathouse, and gain insight into what it took to row, fish, and survive under the harsh conditions of Lofoten. This short walk through little Storvågan brings history to life and lets you walk in the footsteps of those who lived from the sea hundreds of years ago.
This excursion is not suitable for guests who have difficulty walking or standing for extended periods.
